Rebellious Cork City a Jamming Music Destination

Share

From vintage pubs to converted churches, Cork City has some of the coolest, intimate music venues.

Set in the south of Ireland and known as the isle's Rebel City, Cork is one of my favorite destinations for its small urban setting, great food, and a terrific Trad and folk music scene.

Fall is one of my favorite times to head to Cork for mild weather and fewer crowds. Cork City music is vibrant in the fall when the city is chock-full of great music festivals, including IndieCork, the Cork Folk Festival, and the Cork Jazz Festival.

You probably can’t go wrong with any music venue here because Cork music is generally terrific. And there’s always a music session going on somewhere. This handy guide of The Lee Sessions will point you in the right musical direction.

While this is just a smattering of what this compact town has to offer for where to listen to music, these are a few of my favorite Cork City music spots.

Sin É

Set in the Victorian Quarter just north of the River Lee, tiny Sin É may be my very favorite Cork City music hangout. Pronounced “shin-ay,” it roughly translates from Celtic to “That’s it” in deference to the next-door funeral home. Sin É has a long history reflected in its cool, snug interior space with its regular Cork City music sessions. It’s so intimate and packed with locals that you’re definitely going to make some new friends. I typically stay in this part of town, and Sin É feels like my local pub.

The Corner House

Next door to Sin E, The Corner House was established more than 150 years ago. It is as quaint as its neighbor, but has a more spacious interior. Vibrant yet low-key, this complete-with-fireplace pub offers some great regular music, including a Thursday night blues session. Here you will find offerings of wine and whiskey in addition to the typical beer menu.

An Spailpín Fánac

Established in 1771, An Spailpín Fánac oozes history. Its cave-like interior feels like you’ve stepped back in time. The pub is carved into intimate rooms with cozy seating. Regular music is featured in the pub downstairs, but there is also a great concert space upstairs for special events. I was originally drawn to An Spailpín Fánac to see the phenomenal White Horse Guitar Club. But now it’s become one of my Cork City music mainstays.

Triskel Arts Centre

This charmingly re-purposed Christchurch, the Triskel Arts Centre offers a range of cultural events from movies to gallery exhibits. And it’s a particularly fine place to catch special Cork City music events. Check out its calendar to purchase tickets to Triskel’s upstairs church concert venue, where the nave serves as auditorium with seating in comfy red pews.

Triskel is set in a narrow alley in the heart of Cork and is also perfect for a pleasant respite from trekking the city at its casual downstairs café, complete with free wifi.

Live at St. Luke’s

St Luke's Concert Cork City Ireland

If you’re looking for concert ambiance, then St. Luke’s is for you. Attending a concert at St. Luke’s is an opportunity to get off the beaten Cork City music path and into a local neighborhood.

I arrived early for a Folk Festival performance and grabbed a seat in one of the front rows (St. Luke’s site advises that you may want to bring a cushion for its hardwood pews). The seating in the church's nave is fairly long, but nab a front pew and it feels truly intimate.

St. Luke's is definitely one of my favorite concert venues anywhere.

The lovely former Church of Ireland was rebuilt in 1889 after being destroyed by fire two years earlier. It ceased operating as a church in 2003.

The church is a brisk 15-minute walk up the hill from MacCurtain Street where the St. Luke's neighborhood looms in the north hills over the Cork vista. But it's also easy enough to jump into a taxi to take you up to St. Luke's. There are a few eateries and pubs in the little neighborhood square for before or after a show.

You’ll also find plenty of fantastic musicians on Cork’s streets. Some you will find randomly as up-and-coming musicians busking around town. Others will be part of Cork’s many festivals. Keep you’re eyes and ears peeled as you walk around Cork’s city center.
