Downtown Oakland: Old Oakland

Swan’s Market

Think modern industrial food court open seating with upscale food in an order at the counter format – but this is not fast food. The garage style roll-up doors give it an open-air feel and pleasant sidewalk seating in good weather. There are additional options, but these are my favorite:

  • Cosecha: The crown jewel at Swan’s is this artisan Mexican restaurant – and the enormous lines demonstrate how much it is beloved. Consider strategic off hours – or bring your patience. Some of the best Margaritas and Palomas in town. The guacamole and shrimp tacos (when they’re on the menu) are hard to pass up.
  • The Cook & Her Farmer: Excellent salads and one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I’ve ever had. They also serve oysters – and have a bucket of chilled, tasty wines ready to pour.
  • Rosemunde: About 15 changing craft beers on tap that can accompany housemade sausage. They usually have about 3-4 tasty vegan dogs on the menu. Indoor and outdoor picnic table style seating with plenty of TVs. Cash only – although they have a cash machine if you forget

Desco

Pleasant neighborhood Italian spot with wood-fired over. This has been one of my favorite spots over the years because of its great setting with high ceilings and wall of window. I have mixed feelings about recommending though due to lackadaisical, disinterested service – this is a change. I often like to sit at their substantial, attractive bar and have a glass of wine and a couple of small plates. I’m not a big fan of their doughy pizzas, but I do love their wood-fired Calamari salad. They have an interesting and robust Italian wine-by-the glass list. Desco also has nice patio seating and a good Happy Hour, including on the weekends. A nice place to lounge on the sidewalk with a glass of rose on a warm Sunday afternoon.

The Trappist

This beer spot feels Old World and offers a robust selection of both classic and new style craft beer. The Trappist is charming but its tiny maze-like interior can quickly get packed, due to its popularity. Prepare to wait in line to order.

Tamarindo

Tequila bar and tasty upscale Mexican restaurant.

Friday Farmer’s Market

One of the best Farmer’s Markets in the region with a wide and interesting variety of produces, as well as prepared foods. 8am – 2pm each week

Ratto’s

Historic family-owned Italian deli that has been in this spot for over a hundred years. Great vintage interior space that is filled with Italian imports and bulk goods. Grab a made-to-order sandwich from the deli that takes up the center of the large room.
